The pressure continues to mount on Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglu after his side relinquished their one-goal lead at Anfield on Thursday night in timid fashion, which has made the Aussie's promise of a trophy in his second season look less likely. A trip to Aston Villa isn't what he would have in mind to try and resurrect their season and progress into the FA Cup Fifth Round - especially given the job their did when facing National League Tamworth in the last round. Villa will undoubtedly have eyes on much bigger prizes with them safely through to the Champions League Last 16, and with boss Unai Emery's FA Cup track record, it wouldn't be a shock if Spurs were to give themselves a lifeline here.
Despite Unai Emery's comments about wanting to reach the latter stages of this competition prior to their Third Round tie against West Ham, it's hard to see that the Villa manager has changed his stance on domestic cup competitions given his sheer lack of disrespect he has shown them throughout his career. Therefore, I was surprised to see them turnaround a one-goal deficit against West Ham. Emery has only registered three wins in his nine domestic cup fixtures as the Aston Villa manager, which has seen them lose to Manchester United, Stevenage, Everton, Chelsea and Crystal Palace. He has only seen his side progress against Premier League opposition once (in the last round against West Ham), and therefore I am keen to explore any value on offer surrounding their opponents Tottenham. Given the volatile form that Spurs have displayed throughout the season, I was reluctant to get stuck in on their price in the 'Win' market, and have relied on them just at least managing to get on the scoresheet. Should they do this, it's highly likely that Heung-Min Son will be involved, especially given the fresh injury to Richarlison that was suffered on Thursday night. Aston Villa have been favourable opponents for the Spurs captain, scoring seven goals in his ten appearances against them. I was surprised to see the 11/4 on offer for him to continue that form here. He has managed both a brace and hat-trick against Villa in the past, so am willing to have a small punt on him repeating that here at 22/1 and 125/1 respectively. Given the aforementioned injury to Richarlison, it is likely that either Son or new signing Mathys Tel will lead the line for Spurs, and should it be the Korean, these prices will definitely contract.
Aston Villa have been able to welcome their captain John McGinn back into the side in recent weeks following a recurring hamstring injury that has hampered the Scottish international. He has picked right back up where he left off, making his presence known all over the pitch. This has seen him commit 1.24 fouls per 90 this season, and pick up four yellow cards in the process. He has also picked up three cards in his last four appearances against Spurs (including a red card when the two sides met at Villa Park in March 2024), this has also seen him commit at least two fouls in eight of his ten appearances against Tottenham, and I don't see that changing here. Therefore, I feel that the 18/5 on offer for him to find his way into Anthony Taylor's notebook here generous.
